And I always took the 101 and PCH up to Northern Cali. 5 may be faster but where's the fun in driving with 18 wheeler trucks pounding by? I'd stop for strawberries in Ventura, Calabasas, hit Carlsbad for pea soup, take in the smaller roads into other towns for vegetables or whatever fruit was in season, pick up a box of garlic at Gilroy, then go to Carmel or Monterey before a wine course in Sonoma and Napa.
